The students scared with ghost stories and Brisbane’s Jack the Ripper had them on edge, even when finding out about their own Army General which had such an impression on Brisbane, the US General Douglas MacArthur who ran the Second World War South West Pacific Campaign from Brisbane.

After the tour and on a tight schedule, the students rushed off to Australia Zoo for the afternoon of crocodiles, koalas and kangaroos.

Next heading to the Whitsundays for some beach action a special thanks must go to the group organisers, in particular Bob Matthews for it can’t

Socceroos out of the World Cup

If only Germany didn’t thump us so hard in our first game we’d be in the second round. But as Aussies we are proud of our boys for giving it to the world in what looked to be one of the hardest pools to be placed in.

It can not be ignored that Australian’s for a long time has never considered soccer to be one of the top key sports with so many different codes played in Australia. But these boys in the last World Cup and this years have shown the world we are on the level of the countries which pay millions for players and live and breath the sport. Give it another 10 or 15 years and Australia we be easily one of the contenders for the World Cup win with such support for the sport in general only building in that time with many players seeing the money, success and Socceroos jersey in their sights!

Well done boys!!

Goodbye K Rudd and welcome the first female Prime Minister of Australia

Posted By: My Australia Tours on in Free Walking Tour - Comments: No Comments »

So where in the world did this come from!!

A few things broke out today which has never happened in Australia’s history. Not only did we have a change in the left wing Labor party leader, but it was a change in the Prime Minister as they are currently in government. Secondly, Julia Gillard won the internal party vote against PM Kevin Rudd on who should lead the country and Julia being the first female ever to be sworn in as Austraila’s Prime Minister. Actually, Kevin Rudd backed out without going to the party vote.

So how did this come about? Well going purely from the polls, Kevin Rudd lost so much respect not only from the general public in Australia, but his own Labor supporters that have been Labor voters their entire life were thinking “what is this guy doing”. It was that loss of support in this crucial election year in which why the party decided a change needed to happen to get Australian’s backing again. That change booting out Kevin Rudd and what looks like in a way, stabbing him in the back. So K Rudd is out and Julia is in.

Now what is Julia going to do? I think we’ll have to wait and see if she can gain every Australian’s confidence as she is now Prime Minister and is wanting to hang onto that through the next election. Only time will tell!

One thing is for sure. It was a big surprise for a lot of people and some people feel cheated as K Rudd was voted in as Prime Minister and not Julia. But when we as Australian’s do go to the polls to vote, we don’t vote for the Prime Minister like what the American’s do with their President. We simply vote for the party, in which the party leader at the time wins the Prime Minister role and up until now has always held that position leading into the next election.

Also, has to be mentioned that Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, isn’t even AUSTRALIAN!!!! Our crazy red head PM was born in Wales!! Moved here at the age of 6, so I’m sure we can claim her as our own though.

Ryan visits the QLD Art Gallery – Tour Brisbane

If there is something you must see in Brisbane right now, that is the Ron Mueck exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art at Southbank Parklands.

Ron basically makes Madame Tussauds a waste of money, through creating some really funky art. He casts life like people out of wax with amazing skill, however changes the size. The way in which he can attach hair and recreate these ‘people’ in such a life like manner, was breath taking.

Below I’ve taken some photos of my adventure with a newly born baby the size of a car and a 2 foot tall man sitting in a boat. The over size hanging chicken was a little strange. If we are ever able to actually genetically change a chicken to that size, I sure hope I’m not around.

My travels around the world have taken me to some of the best art made. They list from

- saying hi to Mona in the Louvre (Paris, France)
- tripped out with Van looking at the Starry Night (Amsterdam, Holland)
- chased the pigeons outside the National Galley in Trafalgar Square (London, England)
- had a beer with Michael in the Sistine Chapel (Vatican City)
- climbing stolen 2,000 year old roman steps surrounded by Gods on an Island of Museums (Berlin, Germany)
- street art and some strange characters on the beach in Venice (California, USA)
- declared war on the price of a wood carving (Bangkok, Thailand)

I put Ron right up there with some awesome sights. I’ll leave you up to decide on what you think of this exhibition, but I highly recommend saying hi to Ron and his friends at the Gallery of Modern Art.

Both art gallery’s and museum in Brisbane are free, however this exhibition will set you back $12 for adults and $9 for students.

p.s. the huge bunny is just a blow up… not one of Rons…and see if you can spot the chicken dancers?
